There were 11,889 inhabitants in the East Region in December 2003. This is about 4.1% of the national population. There were 525, or 8.0% more men than women in the region.
On the same date, 8,959 people, or about 3.0% of Iceland´s population, lived in the Central East Region. There were 369, or nearly 8.0% more men than women in the region. The largest municipalities in the Central East Region are Fjardabyggd (Eskifjördur, Reydarfjördur, Nordfjördur, Fáskrúdsfjördur and Stödvarfjördur) Egilsstaðir, Seydisfjördur and Austurbyggd. About 1,139 people live in the adjacent villages of Breiðdalsvík, Vopnafjörður and Borgarfjörður eystri.
