Indicator 1.17 - Quality of Schools
The Karahnjukar and Fjardaal projects are likely to affect the education system in East Iceland. The increased number of people living in local communities during both the construction and operational phases of the projects has increased the demand on local school systems.
This includes both the direct effects of employees and contractors, as well as the indirect demand generated by people moving to the project area in association with businesses providing goods and services to the projects.
The schools in the project area will therefore need to maintain the current quality of education to an increasing and possibly a more culturally diverse student population.

A. Results of standardized tests for primary students (4th, 7th and 10th grade) in East Iceland in 2007-2011.

B. Percentage of teachers without certification in primary schools in East Iceland vs. nationally.
The image on the left shows the average national percentage, and the one on the right is for East Iceland. Blue means "with certification" and red "without certification," so the ratio of certified teachers is obviously lower in East Iceland. However, their number is growing, as the figures for 2009 and 2010 show.

Metrics: What is measured?
- Results of standardized tests for primary students (10th grade) in East Iceland vs. nationally. (Project effect: induced).
- Percent of teachers without certification in primary schools in East Iceland vs. nationally. (Project effect: induced).
Targets

Monitoring Protocol
-

It is also possible to ask the institute for specific results if the information on the website are not sufficient to be tailored the metric. Information will be collected yearly.
-
Information on percent of teachers without certification in primary schools is available at Iceland Statistics and updated once a year.
Rationale for Indicator Selection
The Karahnjukar and Fjardaal projects are likely to affect the education system in East Iceland. The increased number of people living in local communities during both the construction and operational phases of the projects have increased the demand on local school systems.
This includes both the direct effects of employees and contractors, as well as the indirect demand generated by people moving to the project area in association with businesses providing goods and services to the projects.
The schools in the project area will therefore need to maintain the former quality of education to an increasing and possibly a more culturally diverse student population.
