Indicator 1.3 - Employee Safety


Alcoa and Landsvirkjun Samfélag - Öryggi starfsfólkscan have a direct influence on their employees' health and safety.

The companies can, for instance, directly influence and manage the risk of accidents through implementation of an Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) program within the companies.

Assessing and mitigating the risk of accidents during construction and operation of the projects should reduce the likelihood of accidents and forced injury-related time off.

Metrics, Targets and Monitoring Protocol


What is measured?

a) Number of reportable accidents at the Karahnjukar and Fjardaal projects per year (Project effect: direct).

b) Time lost due to injury per year as reported by Alcoa, Landsvirkjun, and their sub-contractors (Project effect: direct).

Targets 

a) During construction of Kárahnjúkar: Number of accidents will remain constant or decrease over time (target set from beginning of 2006) / During construction of Fjardaál: Zero reportable accidents per year. After operation starts: Fljótsdalur Power Station and the Fjardaál smelter: Zero reportable accidents.

b) During construction of Kárahnjúkar: Number of accidents will remain constant or decrease over time (target set from beginning of 2006) / During construction of Fjardaál: Zero lost workday injuries. After operation starts: Fljótsdalur Power Station and the Fjardaál smelter: Zero lost workday injuries.

Monitoring Protocol

a) During construction: Statistics from contractors available in monthly reports to companies. After operation starts: Fjardaál's EHS team collects information for Fjardaral during operation. Landsvirkjun's Engineering and Implementation Department collects information for the operational phase of the hydropower station. Every incident is recorded.

b) Statistics from contractors are available in monthly reports to companies. Fjardaál's EHS team collects information for Fjardaral during operation. Landsvirkjun's Engineering and Implementation Department collects information for the operational phase of the hydropower station. Every incident is recorded.
