Indicator 1.5 - Involvement in Local Community

This indicator relates to Alcoa Fjardaál only.
The number of residents in East Iceland has increased because of the Alcoa and Landsvirkjun projects, as both direct and indirect jobs have been created. It is important for new members of the community to adjust properly, and Alcoa Fjardaál aids in that process by encouraging the company's employees to participage in volunteering programs.
The Alcoa foundation encourages and supports Alcoa employee volunteering activities worldwide. Fjardaál employees can choose between two programs, the Action program which involves groups of employees, or the Bravo! program for individual volunteers.
Performance
In 2007, 109 Fjardaál employees, or around 24.1% of the company's workforce, were involved in community volunteer programs sponsored by Alcoa. Since then, employee participation has steadily grown and in 2011, 363 employees - or 76% of the workforce - participated in volunteer programs.
The tables below show a) the development of Fjardaál volunteer program participation and b) the development in number of work hours which employees contribute for volunteer work in 2007-2011.
This table shows Alcoa's employee participation in Alcoa foundation volunteering activities. 76% of employees participated in either Bravo! or Action in 2012, and participation is steadily growing.
Number of work hours contributed by Fjardaál volunteers:
Volunteer work among employees, with the support of Alcoa Fjardaál, did not really start until 2007, because there was a feeling that it would not be sensible to increase the workload on employees, while the construction of the smelter was still in progress. The counting of volunteer work did not start until 2007.

Metrics, Targets and Monitoring Protocol
What is measured?
Hours Alcoa employees participate in Alcoa foundation activities (Project effect: direct). Volunteer work by Fljótsdalur Power Station is not measured so far.
Monitoring protocol
Through allocations paid out. Collected once a year, at the end of the year.
Targets
60 percent of employees who volunteered for Alcoa Foundation programs (Action, Bravo, Week of Service).
Rationale for Indicator Selection
The Karahnjukar and Fjardaal projects will result in a significant increase in local populations both from employees and from businesses supporting the projects. It will be important to help new inhabitants integrate into existing communities.
Alcoa can assist this process by encouraging active employee participation in local community activities.
