As regards the Sustainability Initiative, East Iceland is defined as the region stretching from the peninsula of Langanes in the north to the outwash plain of Skeiðarársandur in the south. These are the same boundaries as those that demarcated the former constituency of East Iceland when the construction projects started. Inside that region, the area defined here as Central East Iceland extends from the municipality of Fljótsdalshérað in the north to that of Breiðdalur in the south. There are therefore three municipalities farther north and south which are located in East Iceland but not in Central East Iceland: Vopnafjörður, Djúpivogur and Hornafjörður.
